on some of my posts i have the little 'edit' button and i have edited away happily on many occasions but i have noticed recently that some of my posts don't have this button, its a bit random which ones do or don't, is there a reason for this?

I think you can edit any post within an hour, but after that, you can't. Unless of course your a mod. But I may be wrong about the exact time.

I don't know exactly where the edit time is set right now. It used to be at 10 minutes, then it was 20, then back to 10... but, AH is right too, sometimes I see a post "self-edited" at almost an hour.

FWIW It should be c10-15 minutes, imo.

I think it is an hour, because I've always seen the edit button up at even 30 minutes and past.

[edit] 59minutes

But, can you still edit at around an hour? I mean, clicking "edit" and having it work. As opposed to, clicking the still visible edit and having it deny access.

Let me know.

I've never been denied access to edit, but I'll try to edit my above post when it gets to be around an hour old.

The administrator has specified that you can only edit messages for 60 minutes after you have posted. This limit has expired, so you must contact the administrator to make alterations on your message.

Looks like it is an hour.

Looks like that needs to be changed back :dunno:

Why? That seems like a reasonable amount of time.

It was changed a few hours ago - c.5 minutes. ;)

The main reason is allows time for corrections to links and such, but not really enough time to completely change a posted opinion. In a way, it helps to encourage better prepared posts.

Yeah but more time allows a person to change something major they've posted, like if they're debating something or arguing with another.

Or the longer time gives to time to change something they think isn't quite right in the post.Say a full paragraph.

The longer time can also help to avoid useless replies, like this one.

But as I was saying. You'll notice a lot, in deeper discussions and debates, that under the text there is usually a "last edited" text. Now with less time, it seems to figure the threads would be a bit more cluddered. Just my 2 cents.

I should also add, that FO made the decision of the time. I encouraged a shorter time than one hour.

Preview post is an awfully good idea in any case. I often read it there, re-edit, re-read et al. then hit Post Reply. I understand your POVs, but there is seldom, if ever, a need for speed in getting a post posted. Better to think about what you want to say, especially if it is in a debate type thread.

There were cases, though rare, in the past, where people would change the viewpoints (with edit) after someone had responded. That cluttered and confused threads, again on the rare times it happened.

But I've sometimes posted things and people have got on my back for it.Then when I read the post it doesn't quite read how I meant to say it so do a little alteration.Which usually solves the problem. Now I'm not saying it should be an hour but 15 mins or 30 mins would seem fair.5 mins is to short a time.

Yeah, I as well feel that at least 15 minutes would be alright. But whatever FO wants:confused:
