Basically i just wanted to say that in my opinion shes not a bad singer (as pop music goes) but i totally agree that she cant act to save her life!...well least not anymore cause she used to be ok but its like the eminem thing in my eyes....ego goes to your head and boom....all downhill from there.....

what do you think? what about others?....Madonna for example?

Saw her in the movies "Maid in Manhattan", "Enough", "Wedding Planner", "The Cell", "Out of Sight", "Anaconda" and "Money Train". I don't think she is a bad actress, liked her in those films.
But you are right, not every singer should start another career as actor. It's the same with actors who sudennly think they can sing. Most of them are bullsh***. Some german soap opera "stars" come to my mind... :o

No doubt I'm one these people you say have been "knocking her." If I can explain why, I'd 1st like to point out that I judge "singers" and "musicans" differently. Musicians create music, whether they're any good at it or not is besides the point; there's an artistic process in what they do. Singers, on the other hand, sing... period. There is some art in what they do - IMO singers interpret song in the same way an actor intreprets a script, but that's about it. They sing, we listen, end of story. I don't believe I've ever heard anyone say that Bob Dylan or Neil Young are bad singers (even though they are!).... they're simply known as being great musicians. They are judged by the sum total of their work,

To bring this back to J- Lo, Brittany Spears, and Madonna, I'm very critical of their singing because frankly they're very average at it.... and to make matters worse that's ALL they do. It never ceases to amaze me when I hear people defending these women.... they always seem to bring up irrelevant things like dance moves, wardrobe, etc.... like they're say anything but actually critique the way these women sing. Listen to them VERY carefully (and this may be difficult as they, and in particular J-Lo, are known for having an extraordinary amount of "post-production" studio work done on their vocals) and you'll see there's nothing special about their voices. There are some singers, like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston whom I dislike because they're way too OTT for my tastes, and I like to accuse them of over-singing.... but at least they can sing. The women in your list are relatively untalented compared to one I just listed. You DID say they weren't bad as far as pop music goes.... well that's who I'm comapring them to. :)

I'm with parker on this. 'Singers' like J-Lo and Madonna are so over hyped that's it's silly. Someone who I like alot is Alicia Keys, she pisses on them both in terms on talent (Voice/writing ability, etc) but I doubt she'll sell a quarter of what the other 2 sell.

i like madonna because she has a very different voice and she has good writers behind most of her newer stuff (ray of light, frozen ok their not new but fairly recent, and i geuss american pie ...even tho i hate the cover her voice made a nice alternate)....britney and all them lot sound the same to me....not much difference...except christina who pretty much either sounds like she is holding her nose when she is singing\screamin

Jackson Actually Jennifer Lopez started out as an actress/dancer then went into singing.

Don't listen to her music anyway but I like her film work, and she looks incredible.

The girl stays in shape, tight little body and she has a killer pair of legs. Benefit of her dancing, then there's her butt of course. Tight little tush on the girl. I dig her.

You could be right about Mariah... I do everything I can not to listen to her voice, so maybe I forgot how bad the shreiking really is. I've seen all of her videos countless times, but I keep the volume down real low (I find the music distracts me from what I'm really interested in :) ).

Re: Madonna... we'll have to agree to disagree; I find her voice to be rather pedestrian. If you want another example of a good "singer," I'd sumbit Janet Jackson's name (I believe she only sings, but might be wrong). In any event, she's a much better singer than the popstars already mentioned. Ditto fo Jacko. (BTW, I hate their music, I speak only of singing ability).

Re: Alicia Keys.... her music is not my cuppa tea, but I respect her talent. Her 2nd album did not receive the fanfare and record sales of the 1st one, but from what I've heard and read it's a worthy follow-up.
